Freddi Goldstein, press secretary for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, says the city will purchase 50,000 test kits weekly from Aria Diagnostics, beginning this week.
According to Johns Hopkins University, New York City has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 at more than 110,000, as well as the most reported deaths at more than 7,900.
In a tweet Monday, Goldstein said, “This is a first step on our path to widespread testing and safely reopening our city.”
Goldstein adds a supply chain is being built within the city to produce up to 50,000 additional tests per week.
Earlier this month, the city of Carmel announced all first responders and city employees who work with the public would be able to receive drive-through testing through Aria Diagnostics.
