The city of Whiting acquired the old Illiana hotel in a Lake County property tax sale in 2013.
Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report city leaders had hoped to renovate the property. But instead, the building was knocked down in 2017 due to safety concerns.
Construction is underway on a new structure which will have commercial space on the first floor, but residential space on the upper floors. According to the paper, this building will bear the name of its predecessor, Illiana.
The publication says the new building will contain eight, two-bedroom apartments for rent. Some of the apartments will be used by Calumet College of St. Joseph, located in Whiting, to use as student housing.
