The Glick Fund awarded PLA with a $125,000 grant to build a readiness program helping students in grades 7-10, with plans to extend as the school grows to grades 7-12 for families and teens on the city’s far east side.
“Our scholars are really working to fight against the odds on the Far Eastside, and we are going to help them win,” said PLA Founder & CEO, Earl Martin Phalen. “Just in the news this week, two of our scholars were shot in the middle of the day standing outside of their homes. It is essential that our children view education as a pathway to a better future, and that our community is able to provide our children not only with the high-quality K-12 education they deserve, but also with the motivation and skills necessary to succeed.”
The program has two components, with one path offering ACT testing support, along with help with for college visits, applying for scholarships and college applications. The career path option will connect students with local companies to receive hands-on training. PLA plans to conduct college and career workshops for the public, with the program launching in 2020.
