Gary was awarded a Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development of more than $3.2 million.
The money will be used to demolish units at two of Gary’s west-side housing developments. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said “Over the past six years, through federal “Hardest Hit” funds, state funding, county local income tax dollars, private partnerships and our in-house demolition, we have been able to demolish 700-1000 abandoned structures. The National Guard demolished 20 properties last year.”
Freeman-Wilson says the city has 4,000-5,000 more structures to tear down. The demolition of the Delaney housing development and Concord Village are expected to start mid-summer.
