State officials announced the details last week. The 1.17 mile walkway will be built along U.S. 50 at a cost of nearly $9 million.
According to the Tribune Star, the multi-use path will be made of prefabricated concrete boardwalks on a steel frame, which will rest on concrete pilings on the south side of U.S. 150. The design calls for the walkway to be 11 feet, 3 inches wide, with 10 feet of space for walking and biking. Design and engineering of the project is scheduled to begin in June, and is expected to take under a year to finish. Contracts likely will be awarded in January 2020, with construction then beginning in April or May 2020, and completion tentatively set for October or November 2020.
The project is helped by U.S. 150 being part of the designated U.S. Bicycle Route 50, which allows INDOT to use federal air quality funds and federal congestion mitigation to cover 80-percent of the cost. Vigo County will be responsible for the other 20-percent, which is more than $1.7 million. The Vigo County Council will first need to appropriate funds for the project.
