The Board of Zoning Appeals in Terre Haute will this week consider a preliminary step in a potential $8.5 million transformation of an old YMCA in downtown Terre Haute. The Tribune-Star reports owners 200 South Sixth Street LLC are seeking a variance as part of plans to turn the 1930s-era building into a more than 40-unit residential property.

The Y building, says the publication, closed in 2006. In May, it was named one of the 10 Most Endangered Landmarks by Indiana Landmarks. The Commonwealth Companies of Wisconsin has reportedly been interested in the 64,000 square-foot former athletic club property. The Tribune-Star reports the developer is expected to apply for federal grants through an Indiana Housing Community Development Authority-administered fund, which could determine if the project moves forward.
