The John Dillinger Museum in Crown Point is closing. The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority did not give a reason for the shutdown of the venue, which moved from Hammond to Crown Point in 2015.

The CVA says the museum has welcomed around 20,000 people from around the world since reopening in the lower level of the historic Old Courthouse in downtown Crown Point. It has hosted several special events including a public viewing of the infamous wooden gun Dillinger used to break out of prison in 1934 and screenings of the movie "Public Enemies."

Crown Point Mayor David Uran says the museum reaped economic benefits for the city, saying it "generated additional foot traffic to our local merchants and brought in visitors from across the nation that may not have normally stopped in Crown Point."

South Chore CVA spokesperson Erika Dahl tells our partners at Lakeshore Public Media the organization is exploring options for the museum, including other possible locations for the exhibits.
