By a 28-20 vote, the Indiana Senate approved an items on Governor Eric Holcomb’s legislative agenda. House Bill 1005 calls for the voter-selected office of the state superintendent of public instruction to be dissolved and replaced with a governor-appointed secretary of education in 2025.

The bill now heads back to the House, which cleared it in February by a 68-29 vote, for a final approval. If the House confirms the measure and Holcomb signs it, the law would take effect January 10, 2025.

HB 1005’s author is House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-88). The proposed legislation also establishes guidelines concerning residency, education and experience qualifications for the position.
