Michigan-based Meijer Inc. has announced plans to add seven new stores in 2017, including two in Indiana. The company says it will invest around $50 million to build the supercenters in McCordsville and Franklin, which will create a total of approximately 600 jobs.

The new stores are part of a more than $375 million effort which includes the remodeling of 22 existing stores as well. The other new stores will be located in Wisconsin as well as the company’s first stores in Michigan’s upper peninsula. 

A spokesman for Meijer says each new store represents an investment of at least $20 to $25 million and approximately 300 full-time and part-time jobs per store. The company adds, once the construction of the new stores and the remodeling of existing stores are complete, the company will have opened more than 50 new stores and upgraded nearly 90 since 2010.

The company has already begun hiring for the McCordsville store, which is expected to open this spring. Meijer currently operates more than 230 stores nationwide.

The announcement is the latest investment in Indiana by Meijer. One year ago, the company said it was investing about $130 million to build new stores and complete upgrades to others throughout the state.
