The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded the city an Airport Improvement Plan grant, which will cover 90 percent of the $8 million project.
Work on the project will include resurfacing, grooving and painting the 5,400-foot long main runway. The city says that runway will also receive light improvements, including high intensity runway lights, which will enhance safety at night and during low-visibility periods.
In addition to the funds from the FAA, the state is also providing 5 percent of the funds needed for the improvements. The city says the project will occur in three phases and is expected to take two and a half years to complete.
