Hanover College Latest to Add Engineering

Subscribe NowHanover College will begin offering majors in engineering and engineering science starting in the fall of 2017. School officials say the new program was sparked by student and faculty interest and also area manufacturers, including Grote Industries Inc., Arvin Sangro Inc. and Vehicle Service Group LLC, which are all located in nearby Madison. The companies will provide internships to Hanover students. Last year, Indiana University trustees also approved a new engineering program for the Bloomington campus.
Hanover says its program will focus on the ideas of engineering, while also maintaining the liberal arts environment and tradition of the college. The curriculum will include mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, computer and geological engineering classes, as well as general education courses.
"We want to offer an alternative for the student who wants to study engineering and a breadth of subjects, learn a language and even study abroad," said Hanover President Lake Lambert.
The college says science and engineering careers are expected to grow through 2018 at twice the rate of the overall U.S. labor force. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the engineering field could grow by as much as 10 percent in the next decade.
"We are looking forward to the pipeline of fresh, new talent coming from Hanover and doing what we can to support the new program," adds Dominic Grote, president and chief executive officer of Grote Industries.
The faculty of Hanover approved the engineering programs in May. The curriculum will be developed in the coming year.
