Study: Entrepreneurship in Indiana Rising, Still Trails

New research from the Missouri-based Kauffman Foundation says Indiana is rising in several entrepreneurship categories, but still lags much of the rest of the country. Among the 25 largest states, Indiana ranked 19th overall last year in the annual Index of Growth Entrepreneurship. In 2014, Indiana came in 21st.

The index measures growth statistics of young businesses just getting started. It tracks and ranks data such as the five-year employment growth rate of startups in each state – Indiana was near the bottom of the 25 "larger states" at 52.24 percent – and share of scaleups, where Indiana placed in the middle of the pack. The latter measure is a percentage based on the number of small firms that grew to employ 50 or more over the course of 10 years versus all other firms ten years or younger. Kauffman measured Indiana at 1.47 percent.

The foundation previously released other national rankings, including the Index of Startup Activity, which spotlights creation activity for new businesses and startup activity engagement. In terms of startup activity last year, the state placed 44th overall, up four spots from 2014.
