School and city leaders will discuss a plan this afternoon for Terre Haute to assume ownership of the facility and invest approximately $70 million in renovation and expansion. An analysis by Indianapolis-based Thomas P. Miller and Associates shows the project could have an economic impact of more than $500 million in Vigo County over 30 years. Indiana State University President Dan Bradley says the effort can help attract conventions and other events that haven't considered Terre Haute in the past. He says the project comes on the heels of “a couple hundred million dollars” in private investments in downtown Terre Haute over the last ten years.
The analysis estimates the project would result in more than one million new visits over 30 years and nearly 8,000 “annualized jobs.” It also projects more than $5 million in new innkeeper's tax revenue and more than $1.6 million in new local option income tax revenue over that time.
