Our partners at WTWO-TV report the adult learning center will be located at the Meadows Shopping Center on the city’s east side.
The Excel Center allows anyone over the age of 18 the chance to earn an Indiana Core 40 high school diploma. The program also offers free tuition and childcare, transportation assistance and flexible scheduling.
“It depends on your life need,” Wabash Valley Goodwill CEO Meredith Osburn said. “You’ve got a full-time job, you’ve got a family to support, so maybe you just come a couple of days a week, a couple of hours a day just depending on how we can help structure you to get you through the door to get you that high school diploma.”
The not-for-profit previously received $250,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding, which is partially supporting the Excel Center with funding for equipment and marketing materials for student recruitment and enrollment, Osburn said.
She said the organization hopes the Excel Center will help address declining graduation rates in Vigo County and give those who failed to graduate high school a second chance.
“We hope to wrap around those students and help them adjust to whatever wasn’t the right fit for them…and see them through until they have that Indiana Core 40 diploma in their hands.”
Construction on the new Excel Center is slated for completion in the spring of 2025. In the meantime, the Excel Center will open Aug. 5 at a temporary location in the basement of the Meadows Shopping Center.
