KFC, WGU cook up a free tuition benefit

Employees at Indiana’s 113 KFC restaurant locations have an opportunity to get their college tuition paid for through a new program announced by the KFC Foundation and Western Governors University. The initiative will cover 100% paid tuition when the student-workers attend WGU to earn an online bachelor’s or master’s degree.
The KFC Foundation says the program is non-competitive, so that every eligible employee who applies and enrolls at WGU will get tuition coverage. KFC workers can access the program on day one of their employment.
WGU offers new online course every month, which means the restaurant employees have flexibility to enroll at any time.
“Every year we look for new ways to support and enhance the lives of KFC restaurant employees,” KFC Foundation Executive Director Emma Horn. “The program at WGU is perfect for someone who may not have enough hours in the day to balance a traditional college experience on top of a full- or part time- job and other life priorities.”
The partners say the KFC Foundation tuition initiative is funded and made possible by programs offered at restaurant registers, such as its “round-up” donation for customer’s bills.
The foundation says there is no requirement for employees that take advantage of the benefit have to stay with the food chain after they graduate.
