The funding will support the construction of the new Indianapolis Colts Welcome Center Plaza.
The welcome center is currently under construction. The plaza will be connected to the existing White River Gardens and house ticketing, restrooms, stroller rental and other expanded amenities.
The zoo says when entering the new welcome center plaza, guests may be welcomed by special animal ambassadors, including an aardvark, sloth, juvenile alligators, birds and snakes.
“The Indianapolis Zoo is a world leader in wildlife and natural conservation and oversees efforts and projects that are truly making a difference across the globe,” Irsay said in a news release. “Not only is the zoo making great strides to preserve nature around the world, but it also provides world-class educational and entertainment opportunities for the entire Indianapolis community and makes our city an even better place to call home.”
The welcome center is slated to open on Memorial Day weekend next year.
