Iconic League Stadium undergoes renovations

The fictional home field of the Rockford Peaches in the 1992 film “A League of Their Own” is undergoing some renovations in Huntingburg, according to our partners at WEHT-TV. League Stadium was built in 1894 and served as a filming location for the popular movie that showcased the creation of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II.
Crews are in the process of improving the infrastructure, such as replacing worn-out seats in the lower level.
“They were getting pretty rough,” said Huntingburg Parks Superintendent Dale Payne. “and the lumber was getting pretty rough, and we just finally made up our minds that if we didn’t get with fixing it up, one of these days we’re not going to have the stadium.”
Payne says the seats that most recently filled the lower level of League Stadium were once the upper level seating at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, former home of the Atlanta Braves. The ballpark hosted the 1996 World Series.
“We brought them in and they’ve been good for about 20 years now, but they were 20 years old when we got them, probably,” said Payne.
He says the parks department may put the seats up for sale, but the idea must be approved by the parks board.
Payne says the new, replacement seats will likely be installed in February. He says they are three-to-five inches wider than the old seats and will make game day a little more comfortable for fans.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the film’s premier.
