Indy Awards Grants to Help Homeless Shelters

The city of Indianapolis has awarded a series of grants to agencies that provide help to homeless or those who are at risk of becoming homeless.

Mayor Joe Hogsett and the Department of Metropolitan Development’s Community Investments division announced recipients for the first round of Emergency Services Grants, which comes from $2.7 million in federal CARES Act funding.

In June, Congress provided $4 billion for HUD’s Emergency Solutions Grants program. The allocated funding can be used to:

• Make more emergency shelters available for homeless individuals and families.
• Operate emergency shelters by providing food, rent, security, maintenance, repair, fuel, equipment, insurance, utilities, furnishings, and supplies necessary for their operation.
• Provide Hotel/Motel Vouchers for homeless families and individuals.
• Provide essential services to people experiencing homelessness including childcare, education services, employment assistance, outpatient health services, legal services, mental health services, substance abuse treatment services, and transportation.
• Prevent individuals from becoming homeless and rapidly rehouse homeless individuals.

Funding recipients include: ASPIRE Indiana Health, Coburn Place Safe Haven, Horizon House, HVAF of Indiana Inc., Stopover, Inc., Dayspring Center, and Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis.
