IndyGo says the policy addresses a new premium paratransit service outside of what is mandated by the American with Disabilities Act.
The public comment period runs through September 8, followed by a public hearing September 23.
“Public engagement has been essential to creatively addressing the challenges of offering countywide door-to-door service while meeting the growing demand,” said President Inez Evans. “This proposal that was designed with the disability community achieves IndyGo’s desire to continue serving all of Marion County beyond what is federally mandated, in a way that enhances our rider experience and is sustainable for the future.”
According to IndyGo, ADA paratransit service requires coverage within three-fourths mile on either side of a fixed route. The draft policy continues to provide service to those with disabilities in the area outside the federally mandated ADA service area. However, IndyGo says “the policy recognizes two service areas which will permit the agency to focus on improving its performance in the required ADA area, while offering a new service to the area beyond the ADA.”
The policy also introduces same-day service as a premium option for trips that start or end in the area beyond the ADA.
IndyGo says the public feedback will inform the final proposal that will be presented to IndyGo’s Board of Directors.
