The Shalom Sanctuary Center for Elder Abuse will assist older adults who have been victims of physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse or neglect.
Hooverwood Living says at least one in ten seniors experience elder abuse.
“The Hooverwood Living family aims to be a full-service continuum of care in our community,” said Chief Executive Officer Evan Lubline. “Currently, the state has no other facility aimed at providing a safe environment for older adults who are victims of abuse, and filling that need was our top priority.”
The shelter will assist older adults in living safely in an environment of their choice.
Han Jacobs Meadway serves as director of the shelter. Hooverwood Living Medical Director Dr. Patrick Healy will support the shelter alongside Hooverwood staff.
“Elder abuse is, unfortunately, a chronically underreported human rights violation,” said Meadway. “This is a community effort, where we are partnering with other organizations to recognize the signs of abuse and offer immediate care to these individuals.”
Hooverwood Living says a typical shelter stay is between 30-120 days. The facility will provide individuals with access to medical care, social services and help them find a living option.
