The organization says it distributed a record amount of food last week totaling more than 1 million pounds.
Gleaners says the actual amount is 1,078,561 pounds. Of that amount, about half was distributed directly into Gleaners 21-county service area. The remaining amount was distributed through the Regional Produce Processing Center to other Food Banks in Indiana and surrounding states.
Gleaners’ COO & CFO Joe Slater sent an email out Friday afternoon to his team, noting the milestone. “Most importantly, over 800,000 meals were provided to the hungry in our community and in our country thanks to your efforts,” said Slater.
Slater said Gleaners distributed 500,000 pounds weekly just two years ago. He credits the staff and volunteers who show up at the facility, working multiple shifts, to help sort, stock, and bag the food. He also thanked donors who make it possible to purchase food.
