He is one of 12 students nationally to earn the award, which covers the full cost of attendance for students who have overcome barriers and successfully started their collegiate careers.
A biology major with a double minor in chemistry and mathematics, Aguirre-Morales will be working in marine labs as a summer intern with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, based in Maryland. In 2017, he interned with Conservation Metrics in California, an organization that automates wildlife survey efforts through technology, statistical rigor, and extensive scientific expertise.
Aguirre-Morales is also involved with the Wabash Liberal Arts Immersion Program, which aims to improve graduation rates of first-generation and traditionally under-represented populations.
“Miguel is an exceptionally enthusiastic and passionate student, unafraid to tackle complex tasks that would intimidate many of his peers,” said Bradley E. Carlson, assistant professor of biology. “He delights in learning new things and developing new skills. Miguel is a force for positivity and optimism and a delight to work with.”
