Subscribe NowThe president of the Indiana Retail Council believes a truce between his group and the Indiana Beverage Retailers Association on Sunday alcohol sales marks the beginning of a new era at the Indiana Statehouse. "It really sets a new tone for both of our organizations and our memberships going forward," said Grant Monahan. "I think it puts an end to the alcohol wars in the Statehouse for a long time." The two groups recently announced a deal to support Sunday carryout sales of alcohol, but oppose expanded cold beer sales. Last week, the Alcohol Code Revision Commission voted to support Sunday sales, but tabled a decision on the cold beer issue.
Monahan, who appeared this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television with IBRA Chief Executive Officer Patrick Tamm, responded to criticism from convenience store owners, including Anderson-based Ricker Oil Co. co-founder Jay Ricker, of "a backroom deal."
The commission has two more scheduled meetings before they present their full slate of recommendations in advance of the start of the 2018 Indiana General Assembly.
"We’re not delivering anything, this is our legislative priorities for this session," said Tamm. "Working together is almost unprecedented, particularly on this issue. Hoosiers want solutions and we’re looking to deliver on Sunday sales."
