Subscribe NowMinnesota-based Ratner Steel Supply Co. is planning to pump $8.8 million into nearly doubling its footprint at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor. The supplier says it could add up to 37 jobs in Portage by 2019 as a result of the expansion.
The northwest Indiana operation is Ratner Steel’s only one outside its home state. It located to Portage in 2012 and currently employs more than 50 in Indiana. President Steven Gottlieb says "four years ago when we were looking across the country for a location for a new steel facility, Indiana quickly became the obvious choice. From the state’s business-friendly environment to a location at the Port of Indiana that allows us to efficiently distribute to customers in many states, Indiana has provided the ideal backdrop for our business to thrive. That’s allowing us an opportunity to dramatically grow our facility in Portage today, and we couldn’t be more excited."
Ratner Steel says the additional space will help improve logistics efficiency. Construction is currently underway on the 100,000 square-foot project, which is expected to be complete by March. The company is currently hiring machine and crane operators in Portage.
Rathner Steel has been offered up to $260,000 in conditional tax credits from the Indiana Economic Development Corp.
