Pence says unfair trade practices impact Indiana’s steel industry, which employs nearly 23,000 workers.
U.S. Steel, which has operations in Gary and Portage, is accusing China of violations including price fixing and stealing trade secrets. Pence has written to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman asking for an investigation.
Last month, U.S. Steel announced it would lay off around one-quarter of its salaried workers nationwide. Those cuts will likely affect around 750 employees at its operations throughout the United States.
