South Bend Mayor Not Seeking Re-Election

Pete Buttigieg, whose current term ends in just over a year, said during a news conference Monday his administration will continue to work hard during that time "to accomplish our mission to deliver services that empower everyone to thrive."
Buttigieg was first elected mayor in 2011. He said the decision to not run for re-election was a tough one.
"I love coming to work every day," Buttigieg said. "I love the people that I work with, but this isn’t a job you can have to have it, or even because you love it. You’ve got to be ready to bring everything to that work. I didn’t run for mayor because I wanted to be mayor. I ran for mayor because I wanted to do certain things and I believe we’ve gotten so many of those things done and we’re hard at work on a few more things that we plan to deliver, so I believe that body of work will stand as having contributed to this turnaround decade that our city has had."
Buttigieg did not provide any indication on his plans after his run as mayor is over. When asked by reporters if he would comment on a possible presidential bid, the mayor simply said, "Nope."

Buttigieg has sought a national post in the past. In early 2017, Buttigieg announced he was entering the running to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. He withdrew his name from the running the following month.
