The Republic reports the Columbus City Council is considering a proposal for the $6 million acquisition and could vote on the move next month.
Mayor Jim Lienhoop says the opportunity to purchase the more than 35-acre site came as mall owners were looking to sell. The mall has lost three of its four anchor stores and currently only has 17 occupants remaining, according to the publication.
"I think it’s a great move," said Councilor Dascal Bunch. "That property is right in the middle of the city and it’s important that we can control what goes in there. I’m excited about what could be there."
The proposal was made by the city in partnership with Columbus Regional Hospital and the Heritage Fund – The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County. Councilor Tom Dell said, if the city were to acquire the property, it would have to honor the current mall leases, which would provide extra time come up with a final plan for the site.
A specific date for a final vote on the proposal has not yet been announced. You can read more about the proposal from The Republic by clicking here.
