Co-Op Begins Construction on Fiber Network

Subscribe NowThe Martinsville-based South Central Indiana Rural Electric Membership Corp. has begun construction on the first phase of its fiber-to-home network. The cooperative says, when complete in early 2019, the SCI Fiber network will be available to more than 3,700 homes.
SCI REMC says members who join the service will receive high-speed Internet with speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second. Chief Executive Officer James Tanneberger says quality of life and economic development are tied to the availability of high-speed Internet, especially in rural areas.
:Communities within our service territory are underserved, and we recognize the positive role SCI REMC can play in meeting our members’ needs," said Tanneberger. “Access to a high-speed internet connection has gone from a luxury to a necessity, and most of our electric members are at risk of being left behind. We want to make sure this does not happen.”
Plans for the SCI Fiber project were first announced in April. Tanneberger said at the time the entire project will take place in four phases over four years and will be able to reach nearly 24,500 homes in the seven-county service area.
The first phase of the project covers southeastern Morgan County, northwestern Brown County and near Lake Lemon in Monroe County. You can learn more about SCI Fiber by clicking here.
