Cook Medical Poised to Purchase High-Profile NC Property

Subscribe NowBloomington-based Cook Medical has announced an agreement to acquire a former cigarette factory in North Carolina. The medical device manufacturer says it plans to transform the R.J. Reynolds building, vacant since 2012, into the new home for its Winston-Salem operations. Cook Medical employs more than 650 in the North Carolina city.
Cook Medical Winston-Salem facility President Barry Slowey says "to turn part of the R.J. Reynolds building into a life-saving and life-changing medical device manufacturing facility is an exciting transformation. We’re proud to reinvest in the community, the history and the local economy. We need the new space to modernize and transform our operations and manufacturing that will continue providing innovative technologies to help treat patients around the world. The flexibility that the R.J. Reynolds space provides will allow us to purpose build for efficiency in our production lines."
The 850,000 square-foot facility was built in 1961. Cook Medical says it plans to invest in the property and the acquisition is still subject to inspections and final agreements. If all conditions are met, the company expects to close on the deal in the third quarter.
