(NYSE: CGI) has announced plans to exit its three Celadon Driving Academy locations. Celadon Trucking says one of the company’s third-party driving school partners will establish accredited driving schools at the current CDA locations.
The CDA has locations in Indianapolis, Laredo, Texas and Richmond, Virginia. A spokesperson for Celadon tells Inside INdiana Business the Indianapolis location is expected to transition to the new operator by the end of October with the other two locations transitioning by year’s end.
Celadon says it has determined that a third-party model is a "more effective way to hire new drivers."
"We recruit and train thousands of drivers each year and constantly evaluate the optimal mix of experienced drivers, student drivers, and driver trainers," Chief Executive Officer Jon Russell said in a news release. "After a thorough review, we determined that using third-party programs and making additional investments in driver compensation and advanced training would afford a better investment of resources than continuing to operate the schools ourselves. We are trucking specialists, and we will focus on our core business."
Celadon says fewer than 50 workers are employed at the three CDA locations. The majority of the employees are expected to either move to another division within the company or be employed by the new driving school partner.
