The U.S. Senate has confirmed President Donald Trump’s nomination of Indiana State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams for U.S. Surgeon General. On Twitter Thursday, Adams called the confirmation "truly an indescribable honor."

Trump selected Adams in late-June and the Senate confirmed him as the 20th person to serve the position during a flurry of activity prior to its annual August Recess. Adams became Indiana’s health commissioner in 2014 following his appointment by then-Governor Mike Pence. Current Governor Eric Holcomb reappointed Adams in January.

Adams has also served an assistant professor of clinical anesthesia at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a staff anesthesiologist at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis. The U.S. Surgeon General serves a four-year term.
