Pope Francis has selected Bishop Charles Thompson as Archbishop of Indianapolis. Thompson has served as Bishop of Evansville since 2011. He succeeds Cardinal Joseph Tobin, who left Indianapolis in November to become the Archbishop of Newark. At a news conference in Indianapolis, Thompson said he spoke with Tobin after being informed of his appointment and said Tobin was very supportive.
He is a member of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, serving on a number of committees, including the Administrative Committee, the Committee on Priorities and Plans and the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations.
