The grocery chain is closing its Merrillville location and our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report four additional stores in Illinois.
In all, the publication says, around 460 jobs will be affected. In a notice to the state, Strack & Van Til says the closing date will be on or before April 30. Most of the workers at the Merrillville store are clerks.
The Times says the Merrillville location has been in business for decades and a company official says the stores being closed were not profitable and had leases that were ending. Strack & Van Til has had a presence in the region for nearly 60 years and after the closings will have 32 Indiana and Illinois stores. The company’s brands include Strack & Van Til, Ultra Foods and Town & Country.
