Indiana University Vice President For Engagement Bill Stephan says the facility in the city’s certified tech park will give students and faculty the opportunity for collaboration, research and internships. During an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Stephan said he believes the school can take what it learns at the Fishers lab and replicate it throughout the state.
Ball State University will also have a presence in the lab, which is expected to open this summer.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, Launch Fishers founder John Wechsler and ClearObject Chief Executive Officer John McDonald took part in announcing plans for the 25,000 square-foot facility Tuesday morning. ClearObject and Indiana University will be among the founding members of the lab.
Wechsler says, with its historically strong manufacturing industry and growing tech sector, there is "no reason" Indiana should not be a leader in the Internet of Things space. He says the lab will be a "sandbox for discovery and development" as the state works toward that goal.
ClearObject, formerly CloudOne, recently rebranded as an illustration of its sharpened focus on the Internet of Things. The company used Tuesday’s announcement as an opportunity to announce plans to grow its employee base by 15 percent this year, with the potential for further growth in the future. McDonald agrees that Indiana is poised to be a leader in the area, saying, "Internet of Things is about making the next generation of our products that we make in this state."
