POWER magazine has presented the 150-megawatt Amazon Wind Farm Fowler Ridge with its Top Plant Award in the renewables category. The plant began operations in January.
The farm is operated by San Francisco-based Pattern Energy Group Inc. (Nasdaq: PEGI) and supplies the electric grids that power Amazon Web Services Inc. datacenters.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Garland says the facility was the first investment in a wind farm by Amazon Web Services. He adds the company is working on similar projects with Amazon, Google and Walmart.
"The trend of large corporations becoming key renewable energy project partners is a significant new disruptive element in the power industry and this award recognizes that shift," said Gail Reitenbach, editor of POWER. "Amazon Wind Farm is unique among our award winners, as it is the only one with this sort of business plan."
Pattern Energy says the Amazon Wind Farm uses 65 American-made energy turbines to generate enough clean energy to power 46,000 homes each year. The facility is expected to add about $45 million to the regional economy over the next 25 years.
