Indiana Students Named Rhodes Scholars

Subscribe NowThree students from two Hoosier universities have been named to the 2017 class of American Rhodes Scholars. The students, one from Indiana University and two from the University of Notre Dame, will continue their studies at Oxford University in England next October.
IU senior Morgan Mohr, who is currently majoring in history and political science plans to pursue a master’s degree in Comparative Social Policy at Oxford. She is the 17th IU student to receive the Rhodes Scholarship. She attended IU after receiving the university’s Wells Scholarship.
"Morgan is a truly outstanding student and a remarkable civic leader," said IU President Michael McRobbie. "She combines a fundamentally moral vision of a compassionate and just world with a pragmatic optimism that people working together can achieve that vision. Her efforts to improve university policies and promote justice and equality have been exemplary. We at Indiana University are enormously proud that she has been named a Rhodes Scholar."
Notre Dame seniors Christina Grace Watkins and Alexis Doyle were also named recipients of the scholarship. It is the first time in Notre Dame history that two women have been chosen in the same year and the first time the university has had Rhodes Scholars in three consecutive years.
Watkins, who is also a Truman Scholar, is a philosophy major at Notre Dame. She intends to pursue a doctoral degree in Socio-Legal Studies while at Oxford.
Doyle is a double major in biological sciences and international peace studies. While at Oxford, Doyle plans to pursue a master’s degree in Comparative Social Policy.
"We are very proud of Grace and Alexis for earning the distinction of being named Rhodes Scholars," said Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins. "It is a tremendous honor not only for them, but for all of us here at Notre Dame. I want to congratulate first of all Grace and Alexis, but also the faculty here at Notre Dame who taught them and the staff of the Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement who put in countless hours assisting Grace. Alexis and our other candidates for the Rhodes and other scholars’ programs."
