Officials broke ground Tuesday morning on the $40 million facility and Fadness says having a retailer as large as IKEA choosing Fishers speaks volumes about the community. He says, as the 289,000 square-foot store begins to take shape, it will create a tremendous amount of buzz throughout the area.
Fadness tells Inside INdiana Business he is excited about the experience that the store will create in the city. "We know there’s going to be lots of people coming here from outside of town to shop. Whenever you can have something that adds to the vibrancy of your community while, at the same time, benefiting the economic bottom line for a city, that’s a great win. It’s a great day for Fishers."
The Swedish retailer plans to open the new store next fall. Joseph Roth, public affairs manager for IKEA, says the company is known for being a regional draw and a "destination retailer."
"I think by having IKEA here, other businesses in the Fishers area will be able to benefit from the influx of IKEA customers," said Roth. "I also think it will draw other businesses to locate here in Fishers who also want to either benefit from the super-regional draw of IKEA customers or just to be in Fishers because it’s really a signal that Fishers is a good place to do business."
Roth says the project is expected to create more than 500 construction jobs and more than 250 jobs when the store opens.
