Red Bull, IMS to Bring Back Air Race

Less than 24 hours after the inaugural Indianapolis Red Bull Air Race, Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials have announced it will return next year. In a statement, President Doug Boles says a final date will be released "in the coming months." The energy drink and marketing company says the event attracted more than 62,000 fans.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles called the Red Bull Air Race "a fantastic and historic weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the pilots of the Red Bull Air Race. Our city embraced this exciting competition, filling out the North end with spectators and selling out all Tier 1 tickets on Sunday. We’re pleased to share that the Air Race will be coming back to IMS in 2017, with plans in the works to announce a final date in the coming months."

Visit Indy said prior to the event it would assess the economic impact after this weekend, but had estimated between 40,000 and 50,000 would attend. The organization says the Air Race was a regional draw.

German pilot Matthias Dolderer was crowned winner of the event at IMS.
