IU Generates Record Patents

Subscribe NowThe Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. says it received the most patents in its history in the 2015-2016 fiscal year. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a record 53 patents, up from 41 the previous year.
The IURTC was also issued 112 global patents from 35 countries during the fiscal year. Vice President of Technology Commercialization Marie Kerbeshian says university researchers submit hundreds of invention discoveries each year, which are vetted by IURTC technology managers.
"The managers determine which inventions can be protected and the best method to do so, including submitting a patent application to the USPTO," said Kerbeshian. "It can take up to several years for a patent to be issued after an application has been made. The work conducted by IU researchers and IURTC managers has increased the number of invention discoveries and patent applications, which means there is a larger pool that can be turned into issued patents."
In July, the IURTC announced the university had completed 43 licensing agreements, up more than 70 percent from the previous year.
