(NYSE: LMT) subsidiary Sandia Corp. says Purdue, New Mexico State University and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology will provide space and expertise as the consortium competes for a major national laboratory contract.
Other groups led by companies, including Boeing and Battelle have made bids concerning the national laboratories. The company says Purdue, along with the Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue Foundry, will take the lead in technology transfer efforts for Sandia. The role involves partnering with startups and entrepreneurs nationally and in New Mexico to license technology for commercial use.
Purdue President Mitch Daniels says "our missions in research, education and service align extremely well with those of Sandia and our partners in conducting work in the national public interest. The excellence of the partner researchers in areas of importance to national security combined with Purdue’s expertise in technology transfer make this a team without equal."
Sandia says Purdue has one of the most comprehensive technology transfer programs of its kind in the country. "Sandia’s hallmark is nationwide impact coupled with strong New Mexico roots, and we’ve built a team that reflects that character while positioning the Labs to meet the needs of a dynamic national security environment," said Sandia Corp. Board of Directors Chair and Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Space System Rick Ambrose. "Our goal is to help the National Nuclear Security Administration further solidify Sandia’s role as a national asset by bringing in even stronger R&D partnerships, improving the national security talent pipeline and sparking small business growth through a robust commercialization program."
Sandia Corp. has managed and operated the labs since 1993, supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. In addition to six nuclear-deterrence-focused national projects, Sandia also manages more than $1 billion in energy and national security programs.
