Construction on the 106,000 square-foot facility, which will include an advanced wound healing center and an expanded outpatient center, is expected to be complete in 2018.
The three-story West Tower will also include approximately 52 new patient beds. Many services are being relocated from the St. Elizabeth Central campus.
"Our celebration today comes after several years of strategic planning with physician partners and staff, and after carefully listening to patients and the community about how we can continue caring for this growing community," said Terry Wilson, chief executive officer of Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health. "Fittingly, we break ground for a new addition nine years after we broke ground for the East campus."
The health system says all rooms will be identical to the existing rooms at the East campus, which opened in 2010. The ground breaking is the latest for Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health, which broke ground last month on a $10.4 million emergency room at its Crawfordsville campus.
A ground breaking ceremony is planned for the future remodeling of the St. Elizabeth Central campus, according to the health system.
