Officials will cut the ribbon Tuesday on the nearly $20 million Julia M. Carson Transit Center in downtown Indianapolis. The two-story public hub features 19 bus bays, real-time arrival information and public wifi.

The 1.9-acre site also includes elements like rain gardens and solar technology. Passengers of the city’s public transportation authority, IndyGo, currently don’t have a main, centrally located terminal.

The project has taken two years to complete and was initially slated to wrap up late last year.

A referendum involving expanded public transportation is slated to go before Marion County voters in November. The City-County Council approved the referendum last month. It involves a 0.25 percent tax hike.

Dignitaries expected to be on hand at Tuesday’s event include Congressman André Carson (D-7), Federal Transit Administration Region V Deputy Administrator Kelley Brookins, a representative from Mayor Joe Hogsett’s office and IndyGo Chief Executive Officer Michael Terry.
