Governor Mike Pence has signed off on the public-private State Street Redevelopment Project agreement, paving the way for designs to be finalized and work to begin. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.
Officials with the City of West Lafayette and Purdue University Joint Board overseeing the work say discussions with the Plenary Roads State Street development team have resulted in the expansion of the project’s scope to include improvements along Airport Road from U.S. 231 to State Street, as well as McCormick Road from State Street to Stadium Avenue.
Joint Board Chair Ken Sandel says "the addition of these segments to the original scope gives us the complete package we were hoping for. The Perimeter Parkway will accommodate through traffic and allow us to de-emphasize State Street as a thoroughfare, which was one of our main goals."
PRSS is financing, designing and constructing the project and will maintain the pavement for 22 years once all work is complete. After the operations period, the group will transfer project responsibility back to the city. PRSS is made up of Plenary Group USA Ltd., Rieth-Riley Construction Co. Inc., Janssen & Spaans Engineering Inc., and Shrewsberry & Associates LLC.
Officials say the point of the project is to transform the corridor into a "more desirable destination for the local community and visitors."
