Officials hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for the facility, which broke ground in late-2014. It has received support from the city and county, as well as the private sector from such contributors as Kokomo Grain and Chrysler Group LLC, which donated $500,000 before construction even began.
Its official name is the Delmar E. Demaree Family YMCA to honor the local philanthropist officials credit with leading the charge toward nearly $5.4 million in fundraising efforts.
The 73,000 square-foot facility includes a health and wellness center, massive lap pool and warm-water instructional pool, walking track and basketball and racquetball courts.
The organization has been serving Kokomo and Howard County since 1875.
