Gen Con says next year’s convention will move some large events into Lucas Oil Stadium. Gen Con set a record last year with more than 61,400 attendees.
Visit Indy estimates this year’s event had a $67 million economic impact. Chief Executive Officer Adrian Swartout says it has become "evident that we have to accelerate our growth plans to meet attendee, exhibitor and event organizer demand."
Among the events to be moved to Lucas Oil Stadium is True Dungeon, which is an immersive experience allowing players to solve puzzles and battle monsters in environments including lava caverns and an underground city. Organizers will announce additional events to be hosted in the stadium in the coming months.
Gen Con’s current deal with Indianapolis runs through 2020. Earlier this year, Swartout voiced disappointment in the approval of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The Indiana General Assembly would later pass a legislative "fix," specifying the law does not allow discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Gen Con will hold its 49th convention August 4-7, 2016.
