Team in Place For Riverfront Promenade

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has announced the engineering and design team for a promenade that will be part of the city’s downtown riverfront redevelopment. The Riverfront Implementation Committee has selected Riverworks Design Group, which is made up of professionals from five firms.

A contract with the group will be complete next month and then be sent to the city council for final approval. The companies involved are:

• Fort Wayne-based Design Collaborative Inc.
• Fort Wayne-based Hoch Associates P.C.
• Fort Wayne-based Engineering Resources Inc.
• Indianapolis-based American Structurepoint Inc.
• Forum Studio Inc. of Chicago and St. Louis

The work is part of a previously-approved $6 million from the city’s Legacy Fund for the project. The team will craft schematics, final designs and construction documents for the promenade and coordinate all federal, state and local permitting.

Henry says "I’m encouraged by the progress we’re making with our collective efforts to develop the riverfront. This next step in the process is important as we build on the excitement and momentum being generated by innovative projects in the City of Fort Wayne. It’s great to have the best local and national talent working on this unique opportunity along our riverfront."

The promenade concept was born out of a city-commissioned riverfront development study that recommended it as a first phase in the larger effort.

The city says other ongoing parts of the redevelopment include:

• Environmental studies 
• Riparian plan for maintenance/riverbank cleanup/implementation 
• Soil boring work to assess any challenges that may exist
• Programming that includes a variety of activities along the riverfront
• Headwaters Junction feasibility study
• Ecology Center feasibility study
• Property appraisals 
• Property acquisition 

The Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne has set aside $4 million toward the efforts and the Allen County-Fort Wayne Capital Improvement Board has budgeted $3 million for property acquisition. The full scope of the effort will take decades.
