In the past, the school has only offered engineering through partnerships with other institutions.
The software engineering program will focus on the design, development and evaluation of large-scale software systems. Industrial engineering students will work with complex systems involved with processing and delivering a wide range of products. The programs will include design projects and a capstone course allowing students to collaborate with industry partners.
The school says the programs are in response to growing work force demand. It cites Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers, suggesting demand for software engineers will grow by 30 percent between 2010 and 2020. Industrial engineering was recently listed as one of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s "Hoosier Hot 50" jobs for 2015. Provost Deborah Balogh says the degrees will emphasize skills including communication, critical thinking and global awareness.
The engineering program will be housed in Martin Hall on the Indianapolis campus. The school says there will also be dedicated residence hall space for students. UIndy says it expects the new degrees will draw strong interest from international students.
