Officials say the project is expected to be finished in the fall of 2016.
The airport received a $3.089 million FAA grant that will be used on the project.
Officials say the airport received its international designation from U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 2014. They say commercial aircraft will now be able to fly nonstop to and from international destinations due to the Federal Inspection Station.
“I am pleased that our board was able to award the contract to a local contractor. This project is creating local jobs and impacting the local economy from the onset. All of our business development efforts have an end goal of making our community a better place to live, work and play,” SBN executive director Mike Daigle said.
Airport officials say weekly service to Cancun will probably be the first leisure destination served.
