The publication’s Best Colleges lists rate schools on up to 16 “academic excellence” factors.
The publication divides the schools into four categories based on overall types of degrees offered. The colleges and universities are also further subdivided into more specific program and campus life categories.
Overall, U.S. News and World Report collected data on 1,800 schools, ranking 1,376 of them.
The National Universities category include schools that offer a "full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs." National Liberal Arts Colleges "emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study." Schools ranked in the Regional Universities Midwest section "offer a full range of undergraduate programs and some master’s programs but few doctoral programs." Regional Colleges Midwest "focus on undergraduate education but grant fewer than half their degrees in liberal arts disciplines."
