A total of 48 organizations have received funds from the city’s Annual Grants Program COVID-19 Relief Fund to cover utilities, rent or mortgage payments.
The Arts Council says the Indianapolis nonprofit arts and culture sector is losing nearly $9 million per month due to COVID-19-related cancellations and closures. The council says the sector supports 30,000 jobs and generates $440 million in economic impact.
“We’re proud to support our arts community at this critical time,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “But we know that the need remains, even after these dollars have been spent. We need Congress to act quickly to get Indianapolis artists, small business owners, and residents across our city the help they need.”
The federal CARES Act supports the COVID-19 Relief Fund that was approved by the Indianapolis City-County Council in September. Staff of the Arts Council and the board of directors’ grant committee looked over 50 applications in October and November.
